about

One of the first two solo songs I ever wrote and recorded professionally, Sleepytown ended up on my first album in a completely new recording, which was then radically remixed by my brother Brandon. I really liked it at first, but later I decided I wished I had kept it closer to the original version I had recorded with Mary White at QP Sound in North Hollywood. It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written and it seems to be special to my family and some of my friends, so I always wanted to have it sound a little more radio-friendly, if you will. I started to re-record it in 2015, as I needed a new backing track to perform at Kansas City Pridefest. I didn’t complete it at the time (I had intended to include it as a b-side on the “You Leave Me” CD single) but I dug it back out and sent what I had done to Hoagie Hill. He added all the lovely guitar arrangements and gave textures and dimensions to the synth parts I had recorded. Then, he directed me through numerous remote vocal recording sessions until we finally had a take we were both happy with. This is now finally the definitive version!

lyrics

Where is everybody?
She’s always asking me
I tell her they’re in bed just like she should be
Why is it so quiet?
And what would happen if I scream?
Would someone come to rescue or would they even hear me?
And I said not to worry, nothing’s gonna happen here
There isn’t much to favor but there’s even less to fear

here in Sleepytown
No open eyes to meet tonight
here in Sleepytown
But if you listen you can hear the city far away

Doesn’t anybody feel the same as I?
There’s nowhere else I’d rather be than way up in the sky
I’d fly around the world and find the most beautiful place
Then I’d come back you and all our friends
and we’d live forever in a state of grace
And I said you’re a dreamer and I hope you’ll always be
The hardest part is believing when you’re out there running free

from Sleepytown
No open eyes to meet tonight
here in Sleepytown
But if you listen close you’ll hear the city far away

We walk these silent streets
you search for signs of life impatiently
I know one day you’ll want to leave
Your widened eyes
Your wandering feet
Your sense of curiosity
I hope you’ll never forget me

Sleepytown…
no open eyes to meet tonight
here in Sleepytown
but if you listen you can hear the city far away
No open eyes to meet tonight
if you listen close you can hear the city
No open eyes to meet tonight
But if you listen close you’ll hear….

about

Devin Tait Sacramento, California

Having transplanted himself from Kansas to California around the turn of the millennium, Devin Tait quickly found himself derailed from his original plan to join a boyband. Meeting a couple of guitar playing lesbians at karaoke led Tait to form the band Shitting Glitter with Amy Crosby and Von Edwards. After nearly a decade with the band, Tait decided it was time to branch out on his own. ... more
